Concert benefits local families with Winter Home Heating Crisis

The Excelsior Springs Area Democrats hosted Molly Hammer and Fred Albers in Concert to help raise assistance for area families needing help with home heating bills this winter. The benefit was held October 8 and raised $895.
The coming cold months will find some Excelsior Springs families making do without the utilities that most of us have come to depend on. We expect that electricity will give us light and entertainment, gas will heat our rooms, and water will flow from our faucets. We learn during utility outages just how much our lives are made easier and healthier by these services.
Emergency assistance to help individuals and families faced with utility shut offs will be greatly reduced this year, according to Martha Buckman, Social Services Director at Good Samaritan Center. The budget problems of all major governing entities are trickling down to the people who may find themselves in trouble and without resources. Recently disclosed census data shows that the poverty rate in the U.S. has risen to 15%. The usual winter heating help has been so reduced, and the need has grown so much, that after the elderly and the disabled are helped, the aid dollars will likely be gone.

Carolyn Schutte Tribute Fund
The Good Samaritan Center will be accepting donations in tribute to Carolyn Schutte through PayPal. Carolyn, a past board member of the Center, suffered a reaction to a vaccine on June 24 that nearly took her life. She remains in the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit at KUMC.
Since her hospitalization, many in the Excelsior Springs community have offered an outpouring of support for Carolyn and her family. "We again offer our thanks and deep appreciation, but our needs are being met," said Jim Schutte, Carolyn's husband. "However, there are others in our community who do have needs and lack the resources to meet them. Therefore, in lieu of flowers or other gifts of appreciation, we would ask you to donate to the Carolyn Schutte Tribute Fund of the Good Samaritan Center. Your contribution to a charity that she dedicated so much of her time and effort to help develop and maintain would be the highest honor you could pay to Carolyn."
Carolyn Schutte works for Edward Jones Investments as a Financial Advisor. She is a member of the Excelsior Springs City Council and former mayor. Those of you who are interested can follow her progress and sign her guestbook online at Caring Bridge.
